Prof. Tessa Kerre<\/a> is hematoloog, en als kliniekhoofd werkzaam in het UZ Gent. Al tijdens de opleiding geneeskunde in de cursus Immunologie van Prof Jean Plum raakte ze bijzonder ge\u00efnteresseerd in het immuunsysteem. Ze wist ook heel snel dat ze verder wilde specialiseren in de interne geneeskunde en dat ze zich wilde inzetten voor kankerpati\u00ebnten. Maar eerst wilde ze zich begraven in het wetenschappelijk onderzoek, binnen de immunologie, in het labo van, jawel, Jean Plum. <\/p>\n

Na haar klinische specialisatie in interne geneeskunde en de hematologie (studie van het bloed), en meer bijzonder bloedkanker en stamceltransplantatie, wilde ze haar beide passies samenbrengen: ze besloot onderzoek te doen naar immunotherapie, het immuunsysteem inzetten in de strijd tegen kanker. Op dat moment (we schrijven 2006) waren er believers en non-believers in de immunotherapie, de resultaten waren toen nog zeer wisselend. <\/p>\n

Als believer wilde Tessa zich inzetten voor het onderzoek naar immunotherapie, omdat ze geloofde dat dit een manier was om voordien onbehandelbare kankers te behandelen, en misschien zelfs te genezen. In 2013 werd immunotherapie door het toonaangevend wetenschappelijk tijdschrift Science uitgeroepen tot ‘breakthrough of the year<\/em>‘. Sindsdien is immunotherapie aan een steile klim bezig om het veld van de kankerbehandeling totaal te veranderen.<\/p>\n

Een andere passie van Tessa Kerre is zorgen dat haar pati\u00ebnten begrijpen welke ziekte ze hebben en hoe de behandeling werkt: op een eenvoudige manier complexe dingen kunnen uitleggen is van groot belang voor een arts. Immunotherapie is erg complex en niet gemakkelijk uit te leggen. Vanuit die noodzaak ontstond het idee om Immuno-T te ontwikkelen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
